Inver Grove Heights is actively fostering a culture of sustainability, with residents and businesses participating in various initiatives to promote environmental stewardship.
Environmental Advisory Commission
The city’s Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental issues, including land alteration permits and wetland applications. The EAC also promotes public awareness and understanding of local environmental concerns. Meetings are held as needed on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, and residents are encouraged to attend and participate.
Sustainable IGH Awards
To recognize and inspire sustainable actions, the city introduced the Sustainable IGH Awards. Residents and businesses can apply for recognition by demonstrating efforts in energy conservation, water conservation, recycling, and community involvement. The awards have four levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Special Recognition. Applications for the 2026 awards are open until May 8, 2026.
Water Resource Management
With over 630 lakes and wetlands, Inver Grove Heights emphasizes the importance of protecting its water resources. Residents can contribute by redirecting water runoff to gardens, planting native vegetation, and keeping debris out of storm drains. Programs like the Storm Drain Stenciling initiative allow community members to raise awareness about the impact of stormwater on local waterways.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2021, the City Council approved the Energy Action Plan, developed in collaboration with Xcel Energy and community stakeholders. The plan aims to engage homeowners, businesses, and organizations in energy-saving practices to reduce costs and environmental impact.
