Community-Led Environmental Efforts
The city’s Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental issues, including land alteration permits and wetland replacement applications. The EAC also promotes public awareness and understanding of local environmental concerns. Meetings are held as needed on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, and residents are encouraged to attend and participate.
Water Conservation and Protection
With over 630 lakes and wetlands, Inver Grove Heights places a strong emphasis on water resource management. Residents can contribute by redirecting water runoff to gardens, planting native vegetation, and keeping debris out of storm drains. Programs like the Storm Drain Stenciling initiative allow community members to mark storm drains, reminding others that these drains lead directly to local waterways.
Recognizing Sustainable Actions
The Sustainable IGH Awards program acknowledges residents and businesses that implement sustainable practices such as energy conservation, water conservation, recycling, and landscaping with native plants. Participants can achieve recognition levels from Bronze to Gold, with special recognition for significant achievements. The application period for the 2026 awards is open until May 8, 2026.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2021, the City Council approved the Energy Action Plan, developed in collaboration with Xcel Energy and community stakeholders, including Inver Hills Community College. The plan sets goals and strategies to save energy and money throughout the community.
