Inver Grove Heights is witnessing a growing commitment to sustainability among its residents and businesses. Through various initiatives and programs, the community is taking significant steps to protect the environment and promote a greener future.
Environmental Advisory Commission
The city’s Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) plays a pivotal role in addressing environmental issues. Comprising nine citizen members appointed by the City Council, the EAC reviews matters such as land alteration permits, wetland replacement applications, and landfill concerns. The commission also promotes public awareness and understanding of local environmental issues. Meetings are held as needed on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, with live broadcasts available for those unable to attend in person.
Sustainable IGH Awards
To recognize and inspire sustainable actions, the city introduced the Sustainable IGH Awards in June 2024. Residents and businesses demonstrating efforts in energy conservation, water conservation, recycling, and native landscaping are encouraged to apply. The awards offer four recognition levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Special Recognition. Applications for the 2026 awards are open until May 8, 2026.
Water Resource Management
With over 630 lakes and wetlands, along with the Mississippi River, Inver Grove Heights places a strong emphasis on water resource management. The city encourages residents to participate in the Storm Drain Stenciling Program, an initiative by the Lower Mississippi River Watershed Management Organization. This program aims to raise awareness about the direct connection between storm drains and local waterways, emphasizing the importance of keeping pollutants out of the drainage system.
Energy Action Plan
In March 2021, the City Council approved the Energy Action Plan, developed in collaboration with Xcel Energy and community stakeholders, including Inver Hills Community College. The plan sets goals and strategies to save energy and reduce costs across the community, involving homeowners, renters, business owners, and institutions.
Community Involvement
Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay informed and get involved through the IGH Environmental E-News, which provides updates on local environmental news, events, and tips. By participating in these initiatives, the community contributes to a sustainable and environmentally friendly Inver Grove Heights.
