Vikings Lose Jamal Adams for the Season
The Minnesota Vikings got some tough news in their first preseason game: Jamal Adams suffered a torn quadriceps tendon and has been placed on injured reserve, ending his 2026 season before it really began. After signing with the team last month to bring his experience and energy as a hybrid linebacker/safety, Adams went down in the second quarter during the game against the New York Giants. The injury appears related to recent struggles with lower-body health for Adams, heightening concerns for what this means for the defense moving ahead.
With Adams out, the Vikings will lean more heavily on younger players and depth pieces as the roster prepares for the regular season.
Gophers Flash Across Multiple Sports
University of Minnesota athletics had plenty of highs in recent seasons:
- The Gophers clinched their ninth straight bowl victory—an active Big Ten record—by defeating New Mexico 20-17 in overtime at the Rate Bowl.
Off the line, defensive end Anthony Smith stood out, compiling 12.5 sacks and earning first-team All-Big Ten honors.
The football program enters the upcoming season with momentum and high expectations. - In women’s gymnastics, the team advanced to the NCAA Finals—the program’s first time doing so—and earned a best-ever fourth-place finish. The gymnastics squad stunned rankings by upsetting multiple top-seeded teams en route to the championship round.
Meanwhile, women’s basketball also reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2005 and hosted early rounds of the tournament. - Academic success is also a thread through every program. For eight straight semesters, all Gopher sport teams have maintained an average GPA above 3.0, with numerous academic-all Americans and consistent progress reports point to strong performance off the field as well.
Simley Spartans Keep Community Pride Alive
Over in Inver Grove Heights, Simley High School continues to be a pillar of athletics:
- The Spartans compete in the Metro East Conference under the Minnesota State High School League and offer a range of varsity sports—football, basketball, soccer, and more—with strong community support and spirited crowds. Their home games are about more than wins and losses; they bring residents together under the Spartan flag.
- Local youth sports also play a big role. The Inver Grove Heights Baseball Association fields dozens of teams in multiple divisions, holding tournaments and state championship bids, while adult coed volleyball teams in city leagues stay active year round—keeping athletes of all ages engaged.
What’s Ahead
Here’s a glance at what’s on the horizon:
- How the Vikings will adjust their defensive plans without Adams will be one of the most intriguing stories this fall.
- The Gophers are facing a season of expectations—can they build on recent successes in gymnastic, basketball, and football? New players, coaching adjustments, and conference rivalries will test them.
- Simley’s fall sports calendar is full—with varsity football ramping up, soccer season beginning, and local tournaments keeping the energy high. Youth programs and local leagues are the foundation.
Sports are still the glue for this community—big or small, what matters is that we’re cheering together.
