Spartan Sports & Local Highlights: Inver Grove Heights Community Takes the Field

By Sophia Miller

Inver Grove Heights has long been a place where sport is more than a game — it’s community. From our high schools to local youth leagues, from cheering in the stands to the pride on the field, every jersey tells a story. Here’s a look at what’s happening now in our local sports world and why it still matters.

Simley Spartans: High School Traditions & New Chapters

Simley High School continues to be the backbone of local athletics. The Spartans compete across a wide range of sports — everything from football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, hockey to volleyball and more. They’re members of the Metro East Conference and Section 3A in football, and their boys’ basketball, for example, is gearing up for another full season.
Wrestling holds a special place: Simley’s team has built a legacy with multiple state championships and national rankings over recent years, underlining a culture of excellence and consistency.
Behind every game, there are booster clubs, volunteer coaches, and families investing time, energy, and resources — all vital to keeping programs strong and students engaged.

Youth & Middle School Sports: Where the Spark Starts

For many Spartan athletes, their first taste of competition comes in middle school or even earlier. Inver Grove Heights Middle School (IGHMS) offers interscholastic opportunities starting in 6th grade, including swim & dive, track and field, cross country, and developmental golf and tennis. In higher grades, students can compete in soccer, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, Nordic skiing, lacrosse, and adapted sports.
On the community side, Parks & Recreation hosts youth leagues: flag football, softball, lacrosse, soccer and more. There are also scholarship options and volunteer coaching roles — making it possible for many more kids to join and stay involved.

Community Partnerships & Support Systems

Inver Grove Heights doesn’t just support sports by showing up — it supports them structurally. Booster clubs help fund uniforms, equipment, and travel; the city provides accessible fields, parks, and programming; schools offer athletics and adapted sports, intramurals to varsity.
These partnerships help meet rising costs and offer stability, especially in smaller or lower-profile sports, ensuring students have opportunities to try something new without overwhelming financial burdens.

A Spotlight on Local Values in Sport

What does sport in Inver Grove Heights stand for? It stands for teaching leadership, resilience, teamwork. Simley’s code of conduct emphasizes hard work — not just in games but in the classroom, at home, and in character. Youth leagues prioritize inclusivity and fundamentals, letting young players grow in skill without excessive pressure to win.
The support infrastructure—from coaches to school administrators to families—echoes these values, showing up at all levels to cheer progress, effort, and sportsmanship.

Why It All Still Matters

A thriving local sports ecosystem gives us more than trophies. It brings neighbors together, builds confidence in kids, and fosters connections across generations. It teaches that a small-town crowd’s cheer can feel as loud as any stadium roar.
As seasons come and go, that sense of Spartan Pride, of belonging, and of local roots—that’s what lasts.
