Inver Grove Heights is home to over 630 lakes and wetlands, bordered by the Mississippi River. These water bodies are vital to our community’s health and recreation. However, urban development and increased rainfall have led to challenges like stormwater runoff, which can carry pollutants into our waterways.
Community Initiatives
The city has implemented several programs to address these issues:
Storm Drain Stenciling Program
In collaboration with the Lower Mississippi River Watershed Management Organization (LMRWMO), residents can participate in the Storm Drain Stenciling Program. This initiative involves marking storm drains to remind the community that what enters these drains flows directly into nearby lakes and rivers. Groups of all sizes are encouraged to join this effort.
Landscaping for Clean Water Program
Residents are encouraged to plant native gardens and rain gardens, which help absorb rainwater and reduce runoff. Educational resources and grant opportunities are available through the Landscaping for Clean Water Program.
How You Can Help
Every resident can play a part in protecting our water resources:
- Redirect Water Runoff: Use gutters, downspouts, rain chains, swales, and rain barrels to direct water to gardens and permeable areas, preventing it from flowing over hard surfaces like driveways and streets.
- Maintain Storm Drains: Keep leaves, grass clippings, and fertilizers off driveways and streets, and out of storm drains. Consider adopting a drain to keep it clear of debris.
By participating in these initiatives and adopting simple practices, we can collectively ensure the health and beauty of Inver Grove Heights’ waterways for generations to come.
