In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about the environmental impact, noise levels, and the strain on utilities that the facility might introduce. The developer asserts that the center would use water comparable to one or two homes and consume five megawatts of electricity, equivalent to the usage of one to two thousand households.
Despite these assurances, the City Council decided to implement the moratorium to conduct a comprehensive study on data centers’ implications. This decision reflects a growing trend among communities to balance economic development with environmental and infrastructural considerations.
In response to the moratorium, QLevr LLC has threatened legal action, arguing that their application, submitted prior to the council’s vote, should be exempt from the ban. The City Council is set to revisit this issue in June to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the pending application.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and participate in upcoming council meetings to voice their opinions on this matter. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Meetings are open to the public and provide an opportunity for community members to engage with local governance.
