In response to growing community concerns, the Inver Grove Heights City Council has enacted a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This decision, reached through a narrow 3-2 vote, aims to provide city officials with the necessary time to thoroughly evaluate the potential environmental and infrastructural impacts associated with such developments.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to establish a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents in the vicinity have expressed apprehensions regarding potential increases in noise levels, water usage, and the strain on local utilities that such a facility might entail.
City officials have indicated that during the moratorium period, they will conduct comprehensive studies to assess the suitability of data centers within Inver Grove Heights. This includes examining appropriate locations, zoning regulations, and the overall impact on the community’s infrastructure and environment.
While the moratorium is in place, the city encourages residents to participate in public forums and provide input on future developments. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that any decisions made align with the community’s best interests and address the concerns raised by its members.
