In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on data center development within the city. This pause allows officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center on Carmen Avenue. Residents have expressed concerns about noise pollution, increased electricity consumption, and potential environmental effects. The developer, Fortress Investment Group, maintains that the project is not akin to larger data centers and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few homes.
Despite the council’s decision, some residents were frustrated by the lack of public comment before the vote. The city now faces a possible lawsuit from the developer, alleging $150 million in damages due to the delay.
This move aligns Inver Grove Heights with other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan and Rosemount, which have also implemented moratoriums on data centers to better understand their impact on local infrastructure and residents.
