In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on data center development within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on Carmen Avenue. Residents have expressed concerns regarding noise pollution, increased electricity consumption, and potential environmental effects. The developer, Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would be smaller in scale compared to other data centers and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few homes.
Despite the council’s decision, some community members were frustrated by the lack of public comment before the vote. The city now faces a potential lawsuit from the developer, who alleges $150 million in damages due to the project’s delay.
This move aligns Inver Grove Heights with other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan and Rosemount, that have also implemented temporary halts on data center developments to better understand their implications.
