In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on new data center developments. This pause allows city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects these facilities may have on local infrastructure and resources.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, Fortress Investment Group, plans a 50,000-square-foot facility with an anticipated power usage of five megawatts per day. While the developer asserts that the water usage would be comparable to that of a few homes, residents have expressed concerns about possible noise, increased water and electricity demand, and environmental impacts.
During the City Council meeting, the 3-2 vote in favor of the moratorium highlighted the community’s desire to balance economic development with the preservation of local resources. This decision aligns Inver Grove Heights with other Minnesota cities, such as Eagan, that are proactively addressing the rapid growth of data centers and their implications.
City officials will use the moratorium period to conduct comprehensive studies on the effects of data centers, including their impact on noise levels, water and sewer systems, and overall environmental considerations. The findings will guide future decisions regarding data center developments in the area.
