In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials time to study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center on the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, emphasized that the project is not a large-scale data center and that its water usage would be comparable to only a couple of homes. Despite these assurances, residents expressed concerns about noise, water usage, sewer discharge, and utility impacts.
During the council meeting, which resulted in a 3-2 vote in favor of the moratorium, some residents were frustrated by the lack of public comment before the decision was made. Council members stated they had received sufficient input prior to the meeting.
Inver Grove Heights joins other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan, in pausing data center developments to balance economic growth with community concerns. The city plans to use this time to conduct thorough studies and develop guidelines for future data center projects.
