In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential impacts of such facilities on local infrastructure and the environment.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about the facility’s potential effects on noise levels, water usage, and electrical demand. QLevr asserts that the center would consume water equivalent to one or two households and use five megawatts of electricity, comparable to the consumption of one to two thousand homes.
Following the council’s decision, QLevr threatened legal action, arguing that their application, submitted prior to the moratorium, should be exempt. In response, the council has postponed further decisions on the moratorium and plans to revisit the issue in June.
Mayor Brenda Dietrich emphasized the importance of balancing economic development with community well-being, stating, “We need to ensure that any new developments align with our city’s infrastructure capabilities and environmental standards.” The council encourages residents to participate in upcoming meetings to voice their opinions on this matter.
