In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This measure aims to provide city officials with the necessary time to study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center on the former Travel Tags site along Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise levels, and the strain on local infrastructure that the facility might cause.
During the council meeting, members voted 3-2 in favor of the moratorium. The decision allows city staff to conduct a comprehensive study on how data centers could affect noise, water, and sewer systems, and to determine if updates to the zoning code are necessary.
While some community members support the economic development that data centers can bring, others are apprehensive about potential disruptions to their neighborhoods. The council’s decision reflects a commitment to balancing growth with the well-being of residents.
