In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on the development of new or expanded data centers within the city. This pause allows city officials to thoroughly study the potential impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from California-based Fortress Investment Group to build a 50,000-square-foot data center on the former Travel Tags site at 5842 Carmen Avenue East. While the developer assured that the facility’s power usage would be approximately five megawatts per day and that it would comply with city noise and light pollution standards, residents expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise levels, and the strain on local utilities.
During the moratorium, city staff will evaluate the long-term implications of data centers, including their effects on noise, water and sewer systems, and whether existing zoning codes require adjustments. This proactive approach aims to ensure that future developments align with the city’s infrastructure capabilities and community standards.
Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming public hearings and provide input on this matter. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Meeting schedules and agendas are available on the city’s official website.
