In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on data center development within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential environmental and infrastructural impacts of such facilities.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed 55,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue. Residents have expressed concerns about noise pollution, increased energy consumption, and potential strain on local resources. The developer has indicated that the facility would use approximately five megawatts of electricity daily, enough to power nearly 4,800 homes.
During the moratorium, the city plans to evaluate zoning regulations, infrastructure capabilities, and environmental considerations related to data centers. This period will also provide an opportunity for community engagement and input on future developments.
Inver Grove Heights joins other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan and Rosemount, in pausing data center projects to better understand their long-term implications. The decision reflects a growing trend of municipalities taking proactive measures to balance technological advancement with community well-being.
