The Inver Grove Heights City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on new data center developments within the city. This decision, passed by a narrow 3-2 vote, aims to provide city officials with time to study the potential impacts of data centers on zoning, infrastructure, and land use.
The moratorium directly affects a proposed 54,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise pollution, and the suitability of such facilities in residential areas. During a recent council meeting, community members presented a petition with over 700 signatures requesting an environmental assessment of the project.
In response to the moratorium, the developer has threatened legal action, alleging potential damages of $150 million. Despite this, the council proceeded with the pause to ensure thorough evaluation of the project’s implications.
City officials emphasize that the temporary halt is intended to allow for comprehensive study and community input, ensuring that future developments align with the city’s long-term planning and residents’ interests.
