In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on data center developments within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials time to study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few residential homes.
Despite these assurances, some residents have expressed frustration, particularly because the council did not open the floor for public comment before approving the moratorium. This move reflects a growing trend among Minnesota communities, such as Eagan, to proactively address the rapid expansion of data centers and their associated concerns, including water and energy consumption, infrastructure demands, and environmental impacts.
City officials plan to use the moratorium period to thoroughly evaluate these factors and develop guidelines to balance economic development with community well-being.
