In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. The 3-2 vote reflects the council’s intent to thoroughly study the potential impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center on the former Travel Tags site along Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise levels, and the strain on local utilities that the facility might cause.
During the council meeting, some members emphasized the need to balance economic development with community well-being. Council Member Tony Scales stated, “This issue falls outside the scope of our responsibilities, no matter how we each might feel about the flag and as a member of the City Council. Our mandate is to serve the needs of our community.”
Following the moratorium’s enactment, QLevr LLC threatened legal action, arguing that their application, submitted prior to the vote, should be exempt from the ban. The council has decided to revisit the topic in June to address these legal considerations.
Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming council meetings to voice their opinions. The next meeting is scheduled for June 22, 2026, at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
