The Inver Grove Heights City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on the construction of data centers within the city. The decision, reached by a narrow 3-2 vote, comes in response to growing community concerns over a proposed 54,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue East.
Residents have expressed apprehension about potential environmental impacts, noise pollution, and increased strain on local infrastructure. During recent council meetings, community members presented a petition with over 700 signatures requesting an environmental assessment of the project.
The developer behind the proposed data center has indicated that the facility would consume approximately five megawatts of electricity daily, equivalent to the power usage of around 4,800 homes. In response to the moratorium, the developer has threatened legal action against the city, alleging potential damages of $150 million.
The one-year pause will allow city officials to conduct a comprehensive study on the implications of data centers, including their effects on zoning, infrastructure, and the environment. This period aims to ensure that future developments align with the community’s best interests and sustainable growth objectives.
