In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on new data center developments. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects such facilities may have on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few residential homes.
Despite these assurances, some residents have expressed concerns about the project’s impact on noise levels and utility services. The City Council’s decision reflects a cautious approach, balancing economic development opportunities with the need to address community apprehensions.
