In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental impact, noise levels, and the strain on utilities that the facility might cause.
Despite the council’s decision, some community members were frustrated by the lack of public comment before the vote. The developer, QLevr LLC, has indicated that the project would use water comparable to only a couple of homes and electricity equivalent to that of one to two thousand households.
