In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects these facilities may have on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few residential homes.
Despite these assurances, residents have expressed concerns about environmental impacts, noise levels, and the strain on city resources. Some community members were also frustrated by the council’s decision to proceed without additional public comment before approving the moratorium.
