In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few residential homes.
Despite these assurances, some residents have expressed concerns about environmental impacts, noise levels, and the strain on local utilities. The City Council’s decision to proceed without additional public comment has further fueled community frustration.
As the city embarks on this year-long evaluation, officials aim to balance economic development opportunities with the well-being and interests of Inver Grove Heights residents.
