Inside Local Sports: What’s New with the Vikings, Simley, and Youth Athletics

Here’s what’s happening in the world of sports—from the NFL to local pitches and courts—around Inver Grove Heights.

Minnesota Vikings: Eyeing Stability at Quarterback

The Vikings enter their new campaign with a compelling question: who will lead under center? Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are locked in a competition for the starting quarterback role. Murray arrives with more experience and high expectations, while McCarthy looks to claim the job through consistency and strong showings in camp and preseason play.

Offseason moves have also prioritized defense. With additions to the edge rushers and reinforcements throughout the defensive unit, the team looks to tighten up after a season that included a strong finish but ultimately no playoff spot. Fans are hopeful the roster pieces and coaching continuity can push them back into contention in the NFC North.

Simley Schools: Building on Athletics and Opportunity

Simley High School and ISD 199 are continuing to offer robust athletics programs. At the middle school level, students have chances to compete in sports like golf, swimming, tennis, wrestling, and track and field. Adaptive sports are also included, giving more students the chance to participate. High school students can take part in a full slate of sports, plus extracurriculars such as band and theatre.

The Simley Booster Clubs remain active, supporting teams ranging from football and basketball to dance and wrestling. Their work helps provide needed resources, gear, and community spirit to keep programs strong year after year.

Youth and Community Sports: Expanding and Adapting

Inver Grove Heights is alive with youth sports options. Through organizations like RevSports and the local Parks & Recreation department, families can sign up for baseball, flag football, basketball, pickleball, and fitness programs across various ages. These sessions are designed to be inclusive, emphasizing fun and skill-building.

The Great River Figure Skating Club offers ice time at the Veterans Memorial Community Center, supporting skaters of all levels. Meanwhile, the Inver Grove Heights Basketball Association serves grades three through eight with a focus on growth, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit.

Looking Ahead: Facilities & Access

Community members have noted growing demand for outdoor athletic fields, especially for soccer, lacrosse, and football. The city is considering improvements to existing fields—like adding lights and irrigation—and exploring new parks in expanding neighborhoods. As participation increases, accessibility, scheduling, and facility quality are becoming central to planning.

If you’re interested in getting involved—whether playing, coaching, or supporting—check out Simley’s booster organizations or contact your local youth league. There are plenty of ways to be part of the action.
