Inver Grove Heights, nestled along the Mississippi River, is a city that beautifully blends its rich history with a vibrant community spirit. As a resident, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the events and traditions that bring our community together.
A Glimpse into Our History
Our city’s roots trace back to 1852 when settlers from Ireland and Germany were drawn to the area’s rolling green hills and proximity to the Mississippi River. By 1858, the Township of Inver Grove Heights was incorporated, and by 1880, the community had flourished with 240 farms, four churches, and four school districts. This foundation laid the groundwork for the thriving city we know today.
Community Events That Unite Us
Throughout the year, Inver Grove Heights hosts a variety of events that cater to all ages and interests. These gatherings not only provide entertainment but also strengthen the bonds among residents.
Spring and Summer Festivities
As the snow melts and flowers bloom, the city comes alive with events like the Healthy Living Fair in April and the Touch-A-Truck event in May. Summer brings the Huck Finn Fishing Derby in June and the Food Truck Festival in July, offering residents opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and connect with neighbors.
Fall Celebrations
Autumn is marked by the annual Inver Grove Heights Days in September, a community celebration featuring a farmer’s market, classic car show, and business expo. These events highlight the local talent and businesses that make our city unique.
Winter Traditions
The colder months don’t slow us down. The Holidays in the Heights series in December includes a tree lighting ceremony, skate with Santa, and holiday open swim, bringing warmth and joy to the community during the festive season.
Looking Ahead
Our community continues to grow and evolve. The upcoming inclusive playground and splash pad at Heritage Village Park, set to open in 2026, is a testament to our commitment to providing accessible recreational spaces for all residents.
Being part of Inver Grove Heights means more than just residing here; it’s about actively participating in and contributing to a community that values connection, history, and shared experiences. I encourage all residents to take advantage of these events and embrace the community spirit that makes our city truly special.
