Embracing Community Spirit in Inver Grove Heights

Embracing Community Spirit in Inver Grove Heights

Inver Grove Heights is a city that thrives on community engagement and a deep appreciation for its rich history. As a resident, I’ve had the pleasure of participating in numerous events that bring our community together and highlight the unique character of our city.

Community Events That Unite Us

Our city offers a variety of events throughout the year that cater to all ages and interests. For instance, the annual Touch-A-Truck event allows children to explore various vehicles up close, fostering curiosity and learning. This event typically features a sensory-friendly period, ensuring inclusivity for all attendees.

Another highlight is the Inver Groove: Music in the Park series, which provides free, family-friendly concerts during the summer months. These performances showcase local talent and offer a wonderful opportunity for residents to enjoy live music in a relaxed outdoor setting.

Additionally, the St. Paul Farmers’ Market sets up in the Veterans Memorial Community Center parking lot on Sundays from June through October. This market supports local farmers and artisans, offering fresh produce and handmade goods to our community.

A Glimpse into Our Rich History

Understanding our city’s history deepens our connection to it. Inver Grove Heights was established in 1852 by settlers from Ireland and Germany, drawn by the area’s rolling green hills and proximity to the Mississippi River. By 1880, the community had grown to include 240 farms, four churches, and four school districts.

Historic sites like the Rock Island Swing Bridge, built in 1894, serve as reminders of our past. This double-decker swing bridge, which once spanned the Mississippi River, has been transformed into Swing Bridge Park, offering residents a place to reflect on our city’s heritage.

Looking Ahead

Our community continues to evolve while honoring its roots. The upcoming inclusive playground and splash pad at Heritage Village Park, set to open in 2026, exemplify our commitment to creating spaces that welcome everyone.

As residents of Inver Grove Heights, we have the privilege of participating in events and initiatives that strengthen our community bonds and celebrate our shared history. Let’s continue to engage, support, and cherish the unique spirit that makes our city a wonderful place to live.
