Simley Sports Spotlight: Local Pride on the Field and Track

By Sophia Miller

Here in Inver Grove Heights, the athletic season has a rich tapestry woven with close wins, growing youth participation, and impressive performances in both high school and community leagues. Whether you’re rooting for the Simley Spartans or cheering on the youngest athletes joining city leagues, there’s a lot happening on the local sports scene worth celebrating.

Simley Spartans Football: Grit and Growth

Simley High School’s varsity football team is off to a competitive start this season. With a current 2–2 record, the Spartans have already delivered strong moments—most notably a dominant 49–7 win over Minneapolis North and a gritty 42–23 victory against Chisago Lakes. Narrow losses, especially a 21–22 overtime heartbreaker at South St. Paul, show Simley is competitively in every game.

The team averages 31.5 points per game while allowing 18.25, showing both offensive firepower and defensive resilience on most nights. Coaching staff continue to stress consistency, especially in tight-game situations.

Simley’s history also shows promise: their 2022 AAAA state title serves as a beacon for current players striving to add to that legacy.

Cross Country: Distance Teams Making Strides

Simley’s cross country programs—both girls and boys—are putting in strong performances this fall. At the Irondale Early Bird meet, senior Annaleigh Schwab led the girls with a time of 19:44.2, placing among the top individuals, while the team effort placed Simley respectably in the scoring.

In recent invitationals, Simley has ranked mid-pack against strong competition. The depth of talent, especially among underclassmen, suggest the program’s foundation is solid and poised for growth heading into sectional meets and state qualifiers.

Youth Sports: Building the Base at Home

Inver Grove Heights’ Parks & Rec programs are thriving. Offerings like Fall Soccer for ages 5–10, Flag Football for ages 5–9, group golf lessons at Inver Wood, and partnerships across youth baseball, softball, lacrosse, and hockey give kids many ways to get involved. Participation continues to rise, and programs make sure to emphasize fun, fundamentals, and sportsmanship over competition, especially for younger ages.

Volunteers remain crucial—coaching slots for youth volleyball, basketball, and baseball in-house programs are still open. The department offers training to make coaching approachable, even for those without prior experience.

Looking Ahead

As the high school regular season progresses, key matchups are ahead for Simley—especially games that could swing section rankings. The upcoming cross country conference championship and section meets will test the Spartans’ distance squad at full strength.

Meanwhile for the community leagues, winter sports and expanding youth hockey and indoor programming are on the horizon. With new spaces like Brightside Playzone at the VMCC and growing support through scholarships and sponsorships, the infrastructure for youth sports in IGH is strengthening.

Inver Grove Heights’ sports community isn’t just about wins and losses. It’s about character, connection, and growth—on the field and otherwise. And across all levels, there’s reason to be excited about what’s coming next.
