Inver Grove Heights continues to surprise with fresh flavors and new dining destinations. Here’s a look at spots making waves, long-time favorites holding strong, and what’s opening soon around town.
New Openings to Keep on Your Radar
Official Fried Chicken: This homegrown quick-serve chicken concept—best known for its ballpark outposts—is setting up its first brick-and-mortar location in IGH. It’s taking over the former Hangry Joe’s space at 9043 Broderick Boulevard. Expect the same fried classics, with sides and service made to stay. Light remodeling is underway, so keep an eye out for the opening date. Confirmed this summer.
Don Papi Chulo Goes from Food Truck to Full Restaurant
Born on wheels, Don Papi Chulo has long been a go-to for tacos, birria, and homemade snacks. Founders Ramona and Jose Nopala—who’ve called IGH home since 2001—are bringing their passion indoors with a permanent restaurant at 7834 Cahill Avenue. If their food truck interactions are any benchmark, this one will be worth the visit. Their Mexican fare is rooted in family tradition, and their community involvement (including serving teachers at cost) has earned them loyal support.
Local Favorites Worth a Visit
- B-52 Burgers & Brew: A hit for burger lovers. The Carlton burger and garlic fries are frequent mentions among its “favorite plates” online. Casual, kid-friendly, plenty of drink options, and a bar vibe without being loud. Best for a laidback dinner.
- Mallards Southern Kitchen: Craving comfort with a kick? Mallards does southern staples—chicken & waffles, jambalaya, and sweet potato sides—that hit all the right notes. Known as much for its warm atmosphere as its spice.
- Taqueria El Girasol: Authentic Mexican flavors in a no-frills setting, this spot earns high marks for tacos al pastor, horchata, and generous portions. Casual and affordable, with something to satisfy every craving.
- Cahill Diner: Breakfast lovers rejoice. From Cajun-style omelets to classic pancakes, Cahill delivers generous portions without breaking the bank. A go-to for weekend mornings or a comforting dinner.
Food Trucks & Community Events
Food trucks are a vital thread in IGH’s tapestry. They pop up at festivals, gather in recurring events, and offer quick, memorable bites.
The IGH Days Food Truck Festival is a highlight—multiple trucks gather in the Veterans Memorial Community Center parking lot, serving everything from BBQ to sweets. Recent vendor lineups have included Don Papi Chulo, Rollin’ Nolens BBQ, and Unbakeable, among others. A picnic blanket, some shade, and that festival feeling make for a great evening.
Where the Food Scene Seems Headed
Consistency, community-rooted stories, and quality food are rising in priority. Restaurants with local ownership and strong customer relationships—like Don Papi Chulo—are extending their impact. Fast-casual chains like Official Fried Chicken are expanding into IGH, signaling confidence in demand for accessible, quality options. And food trucks continue to fill in gaps, especially for those craving bold flavors without fuss.
So whether you’re in the mood for fried chicken, hearty tacos, or comfort food done well, Inver Grove Heights has something cooking.
