Simley Spartans and Gophers Highlight Inver Grove Heights’ Exciting Start to Sports Season

Hi everyone, Sophia Miller here with an update on sports around Inver Grove Heights—covering high school, college, youth, and whatever’s big nationally. The energy is back, and there’s plenty for our local fans to cheer.

Simley High School: Football Roars in Early Victory

The Simley Spartans opened their high school football season with a strong 49-7 win over North Community High School. The margin reflects not just offensive firepower but a defense that clamped down early and often. Although conference play hasn’t begun, the start has energized fans and players alike. The Spartans’ next game is set for Sept. 10 against Two Rivers.

University of Minnesota Golden Gophers: Solid Early Showing

‘U’ Athletics is making noise already—after opening the season with a 59-7 blowout over Eastern Illinois, the Gophers earned some individual weekly honors. Javon Tracy stood out on special teams. Soccer is off to a strong 5-0-1 start, including a dominant performance versus Colorado College, and volleyball has had its share of ups and downs too but has shown signs of life especially against Auburn. There’s plenty of optimism in the air.

Youth & Community Sports: Building the Bottom

Down at the grassroots level, Inver Grove Heights Youth Basketball is back—serving grades 3 through 8 with a focus on fundamentals, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Players, coaches, and parents are excited to be part of this foundational work. Meanwhile, IGH’s other youth leagues—soccer, flag football, lacrosse—are registering participants and getting fields and courts ready for fall competition. It’s all part of keeping our community engaged in sport year-round.

Why It Matters

  • Strong high school starts not only boost community pride—they help build tradition and momentum for the teams.
  • College performances like those from the Gophers remind us of what’s possible and keep us tuned in nationally.
  • When youth programs thrive, everybody benefits—kids learn, families connect, volunteers make a difference.

If you’re not yet going to games, try it. Simley football, youth league matches, Gopher contests—it’s all part of what makes Inver Grove Heights’ sports scene lively this autumn. I’ll be watching, taking notes, and sharing updates as the competition heats up.
