Water Quality Improvements Underway
Inver Grove Heights is in the process of completing key upgrades to its Water Treatment Plant aimed at reducing elevated levels of combined radium and gross alpha radiation in the city’s drinking water. According to recent tests from February, the city’s rolling annual averages are now below the federal maximum contaminant levels (MCLs), as filtration improvements take effect. The full rehabilitation of the facility is expected to wrap up soon. Even so, city officials say the system remains formally out of compliance with state standards until the project is fully completed.
New Water Resources Plan Now in Place
This spring the city adopted its 2026–2036 Water Resources Management Plan, the 5th generation of its long-range strategy for protecting lakes, rivers, wetlands, and groundwater. Central themes include better stormwater runoff management, erosion control, and encouraging practices by homeowners and businesses—such as rain gardens, proper fertilizer use, and keeping debris out of streets—that help maintain water clarity and reduce pollution.
Moratorium on Data Centers and Community Input
In parallel, the City Council recently enacted a one-year moratorium on new data center construction. This move halts a proposed data center on Carmen Avenue and gives the city time to assess environmental impacts, noise, landscape concerns, and community feedback. The developer has threatened legal action claiming losses if the project is blocked. During the meeting, residents submitted an environmental petition with over 700 signatures and called for stricter oversight of such developments.
What Residents Should Know and Do
- The water is safe to drink while upgrades finish, although extra caution is suggested for people with specific health concerns.
- Stay informed via the city’s public notices for updates on water quality testing and treatment plant progress.
- Have a voice: public hearings and petitions continue to shape decisions about data center development and environmental protections.
- Explore ways you can help water health—like maintaining your property’s drainage, reducing impervious surfaces, and managing lawn care responsibly.
The twin priorities—ensuring drinking water meets health standards, and balancing development with environmental impact—are at the forefront of local governance. How the city proceeds with both will affect public trust, neighborhood quality of life, and long-term sustainability for Inver Grove Heights.
