Hey neighbors, it’s Sophia Miller here with an update on all things sports—both national and close to home. I’m seeing plenty of momentum lately, from community fields to collegiate arenas. Whether you follow high school football, college soccer, or pro hockey, there’s something exciting happening.
National Highlights
The University of Minnesota had a banner year across the board. Their spirit squad brought home more national titles—most recently in Small Coed Game Day Cheer and Dance Pom at the UCA & UDA College Cheer & Dance National Championships. For Pom, it was a fourth straight national crown. The squad also placed in Small Coed Cheer and Dance Jazz, and Goldy Gopher placed second in the Mascot Division. These continue a legacy of excellence.
Macalester College also enjoyed historic success. Their baseball team set a new school record for wins, became MIAC Playoffs champs, and advanced to the NCAA Championships. Club sports also made headlines—with the Men’s/Open Ultimate team “Flat Earth” heading to an NCAA-related national championship for the first time. It’s all underscored by rising expectations and pride.
Meanwhile, Saint Mary’s University celebrated one of its strongest athletic seasons in years. Two student-athletes in men’s hockey earned First-Team All-American honors—the first time since the late ‘80s. And, in a milestone split in postseason success, both women’s basketball and softball qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the same academic year for the first time in more than two decades. Academic achievements made the wins even sweeter.
Local Pulse: Inver Grove Heights & Simley High
At Simley High School, football season training is well underway. The Spartan community, including the youth program and Boosters, continues its year-round dedication to building strong athletes—not just for varsity and JV squads, but all grades. These programs anchor the sense of community here—and reinforce the values of teamwork and growth.
Youth sports are thriving in Inver Grove Heights. As area clubs host T-ball, youth soccer, and volleyball leagues, they’re not only introducing children to sports basics; they’re fostering skills like sportsmanship and discipline—traits that serve both on and off the field.
Why It Matters
Seeing both pro and college teams in Minnesota combining success with academic honors makes it easier to believe young athletes here can reach higher. When high schoolers in our community attend Simley football camps or represent their school, there’s real evidence that pathways to college athletics are open. And it’s not just about elite achievement—it’s about giving athletes tools to succeed in multiple arenas.
To that end, mark your calendar for Simley’s upcoming games, camps, and youth program sign-ups. Get out to support student-athletes training locally—your attendance and encouragement make a difference.
What’s Ahead
- Watch for last-minute scheduling of Simley varsity and JV football games, many of which serve as visibility for younger football players in youth leagues.
- Keep tabs on college postseason rosters—Minnesota, Macalester, Saint Mary’s—and the rising stars who might be making names in national tournaments.
- Stay connected with local youth and high school sports organizations through community events; many of these will double as fundraisers, volunteer opportunities, or talent-build moments.
As always, if you see a local athlete doing something noteworthy—or a team making strides—drop me a line. It’s your stories that make this beat worth covering.
