Inver Grove Heights Food Scene: New Spots, Local Gems & What’s Coming

By Benjamin Hanson

What’s New on the Menu

If you’ve driven by 90th Street East lately, you might’ve spotted signage for Official Fried Chicken, the locally founded quick-service concept that is opening its first brick-and-mortar locations. One of these is set for 9043 Broderick Boulevard in Inver Grove Heights, replacing the former Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken & Wings. Expect fried chicken, slaw, and sides sometime soon—light remodeling is underway.

Also new in town: Izumi Hibachi Express, bringing sushi, ramen, kimchi buns and hibachi-style dishes with generous portions and a welcoming vibe. Locals say the decor is cute and the staff attentive.

Neighborhood Favorites Holding Strong

For consistent comfort food, B-52 Burgers & Brew remains a go-to. The burgers are juicy, the cheddar-wrapped cheese curds are addictive, and the rooftop views are a bonus. Crowds often flock there for game nights.

When you want something more eclectic, Mallards Southern Kitchen delivers—think creole-inspired seafood, blackened fish, and bold sides. It’s pricey, but many locals say your dollars stretch thanks to large portions and flavor.

Trying to grab breakfast without breaking the bank? Cahill Diner offers generous portions—pancakes, hashbrowns, breakfast burritos. Friendly service and relaxed atmosphere make it a favorite.

Food Trucks & Events You Shouldn’t Miss

One highlight of the local food scene is the city-hosted events. IGH Days Food Truck Festival at the Veterans Memorial Community Center is a prime chance to sample from over ten local vendors under the open sky (weather permitting).

If tacos, quesadillas, and street platters are more your style, keep an eye out for La Bamba Food Truck—it’s often praised for generous sizes and flavorful Mexican dishes.

Places Worth a Try

  • Tono Pizzeria + Cheesesteaks—Wood-fired pizza, loaded cheesesteaks, and a lively spot for casual dinner.
  • Iwa Sushi—Clean, fresh sushi rolls plus hibachi and Japanese sides. Good ambiance and a solid option for sushi near home.
  • Don Papi Chulo—Street tacos, birria platters, tamales. High marks from locals for flavor and community vibe.
  • Mississippi Pub—The river view, fish-and-chips, and cozy pub feel make this a go-to for relaxed nights out.

Looking Ahead

MC’s Pub is another arrival to watch for; it’s opening at 6434 Cahill Avenue (same block as Bierstube) and promises a pub-style menu when it launches.

Also notable: LW’s Bierstube, which after over four decades serving German comfort food in Inver Grove Heights, closed in late 2025. That space and reputation are still echoes in the community as people remember schnitzel, brats, and gezellig evenings.

What to Try First

If I had to pick one new place to hit up, it’d be Official Fried Chicken—for fried chicken lovers, this feels like a win. And if you’re in the mood for something more established and varied, Mallards or B-52 Burgers are reliable bets.
