Explore Inver Grove Heights: Parks, Views, and Weekend Adventures

Hi neighbors — it’s Mia Erickson here. If you’re looking to get outside without going far, Inver Grove Heights has a treasure trove of parks, trails, and activities perfect for any weekend. Whether you want to soak in river views, work up a sweat, or find something new with the kids, here are ideas to help plan a local adventure.

Top Outdoor Stops

Swing Bridge Park & the Rock Island Pier

One of our best places for photogenic river vistas. The restored Rock Island Swing Bridge pier stretches out over the Mississippi, ideal for walks, taking in sunsets, or enjoying the nightly LED light shows. Amenities include shelter rental, picnic areas, restrooms, and a trailhead link to the Mississippi River Regional Trail. Park open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

North Valley Park & Disc Golf

Love woodland feels with a little action mixed in? North Valley has 58 wooded acres with ballfields, non-lit courts for tennis and pickleball, a disc golf course, trails, grills, and picnic spots. A great place to pack a lunch and linger outdoors.

Heritage Village Park and Off-Leash Dog Park

For families, dog owners, or anyone wanting a mix of play and open space, this park delivers. Features include the off-leash dog area and playgrounds, plus plans for an inclusive playground and splash pad are expected to roll out in coming months.

More Parks & Trail Gems

Check out spots like Vista Pines Park (with a mountain bike skills course and trails), Harmon Park Reserve, and the Pine Bend Bluffs Scientific and Natural Area for scenic overlooks of the river valley. There are dozens of parks—31 in total—so you can find something close by for walking, winding down, or discovering quiet nature.

Weekend Activity Ideas

  • Bring friends and score a round of mini-golf, a few escape room challenges, or arcade games at Nowhere Entertainment when the weather’s not ideal.
  • Have brunch at Cahill Diner or B-52 Burgers & Brew, favorite local spots with charm and tasty fare.
  • Plan a picnic or small gathering at one of the park shelters—Swing Bridge, for example, is lovely by the river.
  • Try golfing at Inver Wood Golf Course, where both full and executive courses are open to players of varying skill levels.
  • Keep an eye on the events calendar—VMCC (Veterans Memorial Community Center) often hosts concerts in the park, outdoor fitness sessions, or kids’ activities.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Time Outdoors

Pack water and snacks, especially if heading to woodland or river spots. Early morning or evenings are ideal for cooler walks and fewer crowds. Wear layers, even in summer—river breezes tend to sneak up on you. And always check park maps or the city’s Parks & Recreation page for any closures or maintenance work.

Let me know if you want a themed weekend plan—think “kids adventures,” “quiet nature,” or “active fun”—happy to pull a list together!
