In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on data center development within the city. This pause allows officials to thoroughly study the potential impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed 54,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue. Residents have expressed concerns about noise pollution, increased electricity consumption, and environmental effects. During a council meeting, community members presented a petition with over 700 signatures requesting an environmental assessment of the project.
City attorneys have noted that the developer has threatened legal action, alleging potential damages exceeding $150 million if the project is delayed. Despite this, the council proceeded with the moratorium to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the project’s implications.
Over the next year, city officials will conduct studies to assess the environmental, infrastructural, and community impacts of data centers. This period aims to provide a clearer understanding of how such developments align with the city’s long-term planning and residents’ well-being.
