In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on the construction of new data centers within the city. This pause aims to provide time for a comprehensive study of the potential environmental and infrastructural impacts associated with such developments.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed 54,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about noise pollution, increased energy consumption, and potential environmental effects. During council meetings, community members presented a petition with over 700 signatures requesting an environmental assessment of the project.
City officials emphasized that the temporary halt will allow for a thorough evaluation of zoning regulations, infrastructure capacity, and environmental considerations. This approach mirrors actions taken by other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan and Minneapolis, which have also implemented similar pauses on data center developments.
