In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to enact a one-year moratorium on new data center developments. This pause aims to allow the city to thoroughly assess potential impacts on the environment, infrastructure, and local neighborhoods.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed 55,000-square-foot data center on Carmen Avenue. Residents have voiced concerns about increased noise levels, substantial electricity consumption, and potential environmental effects. The facility is projected to use approximately five megawatts of electricity daily, equivalent to the consumption of up to 4,800 homes.
During the council meeting, community members presented a petition with around 700 signatures opposing the project. Despite the developer’s threat of legal action alleging $150 million in damages, the council proceeded with the moratorium to prioritize community interests.
City officials will use this period to conduct comprehensive studies on the implications of data centers and consider necessary adjustments to zoning regulations. This proactive approach reflects the city’s commitment to balancing technological advancement with the well-being of its residents.
