In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center on the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, assured that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few homes. Despite these assurances, residents expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise levels, and the strain on local infrastructure.
During the council meeting, which resulted in a narrow 3-2 vote in favor of the moratorium, some residents were frustrated by the lack of public comment before the decision was made. The council emphasized the need to balance economic development with community well-being and infrastructure capacity.
Inver Grove Heights joins other Minnesota communities, such as Eagan, in proactively addressing the rapid growth of data centers and their associated challenges. The city plans to use the moratorium period to conduct comprehensive studies and engage with residents to ensure that future developments align with the community’s best interests.
