The Inver Grove Heights City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on the development of new or expanded data centers within the city. This decision, reached by a 3-2 vote, aims to provide city officials with time to study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on local infrastructure and residents.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on the former Travel Tags site along Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, asserts that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few residential homes.
Despite these assurances, some residents have expressed concerns about the project’s impact on noise levels and utility services.
