Inver Grove Heights, nestled along the Mississippi River, is a city that beautifully blends its rich history with a vibrant community spirit. As a resident, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the events and traditions that bring our community together.
A Glimpse into Our History
Our city’s roots trace back to 1852 when settlers from Ireland and Germany established the area known as Inver Grove. The name itself is a nod to their homelands: ‘Inver’ from an Irish fishing village and ‘Grove’ representing the German settlers’ homeland. By 1880, the community had flourished with 240 farms, four churches, and four school districts. This foundation of hard work and unity continues to influence our community today.
Community Events That Unite Us
Throughout the year, Inver Grove Heights hosts a variety of events that cater to all ages and interests. These gatherings not only provide entertainment but also strengthen the bonds among residents.
Spring and Summer Festivities
As the snow melts and the days grow longer, our community comes alive with events like the Healthy Living Fair in April and the Touch-A-Truck event in May. These occasions offer opportunities for families to engage with local businesses and services, promoting a healthy and connected lifestyle.
Summer brings the much-anticipated Inver Groove: Music in the Park series, where local musicians showcase their talents, and residents gather to enjoy evenings filled with melodies and camaraderie. The Food Truck Festival and Movie in the Park events further enhance our summer experiences, offering diverse cuisines and cinematic delights under the stars.
Autumn and Winter Celebrations
As the leaves change, we celebrate IGH Days in September, a tradition that highlights our community’s spirit through parades, games, and local showcases. The Ghostly Gathering in October provides a safe and fun environment for children to enjoy Halloween festivities.
Winter doesn’t slow us down. The Holidays in the Heights series in December brings warmth to the cold months with events like the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Breakfast with Santa, fostering a sense of joy and togetherness.
Looking Ahead
Our community’s commitment to inclusivity and recreation is evident in the upcoming addition of the area’s only inclusive playground and splash pad at Heritage Village Park, set to open in 2026. This initiative reflects our dedication to providing spaces where all residents can play, learn, and grow together.
Inver Grove Heights is more than just a place to live; it’s a community that thrives on connection, history, and shared experiences. As we continue to honor our past and embrace the future, the spirit of togetherness remains at the heart of our city.
