In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This move aims to provide city officials with time to study the potential impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from T5 Data Centers to develop a 55,000-square-foot, 5-megawatt facility on the former Travel Tags property at 5890 Carmen Avenue. Residents have expressed concerns regarding noise levels, water usage, and the strain on local utilities that such a development might entail.
City Attorney Bridget Nason explained that the moratorium allows the city to maintain the current state of affairs while conducting necessary studies and considering potential amendments to zoning ordinances and the comprehensive plan.
Inver Grove Heights joins other Minnesota cities, such as Eagan and Rosemount, in pausing data center developments to evaluate their long-term effects on the community and environment.
