In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on new data center developments. This pause allows the city to thoroughly study the potential impacts of such facilities on local infrastructure and the environment.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to construct a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about the facility’s potential effects on noise levels, water usage, and overall community well-being.
City Attorney Bridget Nason explained that the moratorium serves to “preserve the status quo while studies are conducted,” enabling the city to make informed decisions regarding zoning and comprehensive planning.
Inver Grove Heights joins other Minnesota cities, including Eagan and Rosemount, in implementing similar pauses to evaluate the implications of data center developments. This trend reflects a growing need to balance technological advancement with community interests and environmental stewardship.
