Environmental Challenges and Initiatives
Inver Grove Heights has faced environmental challenges, including elevated levels of radium in the water supply. In October 2022, tests revealed radium levels of 6.0 picoCuries per liter (pCi/L), exceeding the maximum contaminant level of 5.4 pCi/L. The city responded promptly, conducting quarterly tests and implementing measures to address the issue. Residents were informed that there was no immediate risk and that alternative water sources or boiling were unnecessary.
Additionally, in December 2022, 11 bald eagles were found poisoned near a landfill in Inver Grove Heights. The University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center determined that the eagles had ingested a euthanasia solution, likely from scavenging carcasses of euthanized animals disposed of at the landfill. After weeks of treatment, six of the eagles were rehabilitated and released back into the wild along the St. Croix River near Hastings.
To address such environmental concerns, the city established the Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC). This nine-member citizen commission reviews environmental issues, including land alteration permits, wetland replacement applications, and landfill matters. The EAC also promotes public awareness and understanding of local environmental issues. Meetings are held as needed on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
