In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, assured that the facility would not resemble the large-scale data centers emerging elsewhere and that its water usage would be comparable to that of a few homes. Despite these assurances, the council voted 3-2 in favor of the moratorium, opting to take a cautious approach.
Residents expressed frustration over the council’s decision to proceed without allowing public comment before the vote. This move reflects a broader trend in Minnesota, where cities like Eagan and Rosemount have also enacted similar moratoriums to evaluate the implications of data center developments.
