In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on local infrastructure and the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center on the former Travel Tags site along Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental impacts, noise levels, and the strain on city utilities that the facility might introduce.
City officials plan to use this period to conduct comprehensive studies on how data centers could affect noise pollution, water and sewer systems, and whether existing zoning codes are adequate to address these developments. The goal is to balance economic growth with the well-being of the community.
Community members are encouraged to participate in upcoming public hearings and provide input on this matter. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Residents can also reach out to council members directly to share their thoughts and concerns.
