Inver Grove Heights, nestled along the Mississippi River, is a city that beautifully blends its rich history with a vibrant community spirit. From its early days as a settlement for Irish and German pioneers to its present-day status as a thriving suburb, our city has always been a place where community and culture flourish.
A Glimpse into Our Past
Established in 1852, Inver Grove Heights attracted settlers drawn by its rolling green hills and proximity to the Mississippi River. The township was named after an Irish fishing village, ‘Inver,’ and the homeland of the German settlers, ‘Grove.’ By 1880, the area boasted 240 farms, four churches, and four school districts, laying the foundation for the community we cherish today.
Celebrating Community Through Events
Our city takes pride in hosting a variety of events that bring residents together and celebrate our shared heritage. Here are some annual highlights:
Inver Grove Heights Days
Held every September, this multi-day festival features a classic car show, business expo, and a farmers’ market. It’s a time when the community comes alive with activities for all ages, fostering a sense of unity and pride.
Holidays in the Heights
As winter approaches, the city transforms into a festive wonderland. Events like the Tree Lighting Ceremony, Skate with Santa, and Breakfast with Santa create lasting memories for families and friends.
Farmers’ Market
From June through October, the St. Paul Farmers’ Market sets up in the VMCC parking lot, offering fresh, locally grown produce and goods. It’s a wonderful opportunity to support local farmers and artisans while enjoying the bounty of the season.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow and evolve, the spirit of community remains at the heart of Inver Grove Heights. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to the area, there’s always an opportunity to get involved, connect with neighbors, and celebrate the unique character of our city.
