In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This measure aims to provide city officials with the necessary time to study the potential long-term impacts of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposal from QLevr LLC to build a 54,000-square-foot data center at the former Travel Tags site on Carmen Avenue East. Residents have expressed concerns about environmental effects, noise levels, and the strain on local infrastructure that the facility might cause.
During the council meeting, the developer emphasized that the proposed data center is not comparable to larger facilities elsewhere and that its water usage would be similar to that of a few residential homes. Despite this, the council voted 3-2 in favor of the moratorium, reflecting the community’s desire for a thorough evaluation before proceeding with such developments.
City officials plan to use the moratorium period to conduct comprehensive studies on the potential impacts of data centers, including their effects on noise, water, and sewer systems. This proactive approach aims to balance economic development with the well-being of Inver Grove Heights residents.
