In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council voted 3-2 to implement a one-year moratorium on the development of data centers within the city. This pause aims to allow city officials to thoroughly study the potential long-term effects of such facilities on the community.
The moratorium was prompted by a proposed data center project on the former Travel Tags site located on Carmen Avenue. The developer, California-based Fortress Investment Group, plans to construct a 50,000-square-foot facility, approximately one-third the size of the previous building. The anticipated power usage for this facility is five megawatts per day. Concerns have been raised by residents regarding environmental impact, noise levels, and the strain on local utilities.
During the moratorium, city staff will conduct a comprehensive study to evaluate the implications of data centers on noise, water and sewer systems, and to determine if updates to the zoning code are necessary. This proactive approach reflects the city’s commitment to responsible development and addressing community concerns.
