In a recent decision, the Inver Grove Heights City Council approved a one-year moratorium on the construction and expansion of data centers within the city. This move comes in response to growing concerns from residents about the potential environmental and infrastructural impacts of such facilities.
The moratorium, passed with a narrow 3-2 vote, aims to provide city officials with the necessary time to conduct comprehensive studies on how data centers affect local resources, including noise levels, water usage, and sewer systems. Additionally, the city plans to evaluate existing zoning codes to determine appropriate locations and regulations for future data center developments.
One catalyst for this decision was a proposal by T5 Data Centers to establish a 5-megawatt facility on the former Travel Tags site along Carmen Avenue. While the developer emphasized that the project would be smaller in scale compared to other data centers, residents expressed apprehension about its proximity to residential areas and the potential strain on local utilities.
During the moratorium period, the city encourages community members to participate in public hearings and provide input on the future of data center developments in Inver Grove Heights. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6 p.m. at City Hall, and residents are welcome to attend and voice their opinions.
